Basic Fire Safety Awareness


Fire does not respect anything or anyone, it kills, destroys, maims, scars and it can leave people jobless if their place of work is destroyed by fire. For these reasons you must have a clear understanding of the causes of fire and methods of prevention, some of which are governed by law and enforced by a local Fire Authority. You must be aware of how to prevent fires from getting started and how to deal with a fire that has started through Basic Fire Safety Awareness.


The aim of this unit is to highlight the IMPORTANCE of fire safety awareness. Once you have completed this unit you should be able to:

  • Describe the basic types of hazard classification;
  • Explain the principles of the “Fire Triangle”;
  • describe the rapid rate of fire growth and spread;
  • Explain the initial response to a fire incident as stated in the contingency or emergency plan;
  • Identify the different types of fire extinguisher;
  • Locate the main fire hazards, the fire alarm points and the correct type of fire extinguisher for the type of fire concerned.
